How I know I love my son....

...so we had just turned things around when, wham, he gets hit with a cold and an ear infection, his first, and according to our doctor, probably overdue for a 21 month old.
Let me briefly try to convey to you what it's like to spend a night with an ear infection stricken child:
Get yourself as tired as you can then put Jefferson Starship's "We Built this City on Rock and Roll" in your CD player on infinite repeat. Crank up the volume and break off the nob. Now imagine that the only way to shut off the music is to get up turn the lights on and fill out a NYS-DMV commercial vehicle registration renewal form. This buys you 8 minutes of respite and then the music starts again. Do this from 7:30pm to 7:30am and then go to work.
This is how I know how much I love my child. If anyone put me through a night like that, anyone, I'd probably never speak to them again...or worse. He's now done it for 2 nights in a row and between all the colds and teething probably a dozen other times this year and I still look forward to seeing him when I get home.
He's on the mend now. I got home last night and saw the first hint of smile in 3 days. And so he and I spent a hour assembling his new table and chairs set--he did a great job turning the wrench and tightening the screws--and when it was nearly completed he stood up looked at me and puked all over it and the carpet below. My wife cleaned him up and we all went to bed and slept through the night.
